Day 4... Mummy Dear

Hello and welcome back to my crypt. Today is day 4 and it is all about mummies and maybe some daddies too. *The room groans*

We have an unbelievable fascination with mummies. There is something that intrigues us about a dead corpse wrapped only in linen or the painted mask of the ancient ones. Why is that?

The truth is...I don't know. Maybe it is because it is making light of death. Or maybe it is because we enjoy history. Or possibly we are just fascinated with the whole mummification process. Or maybe...?

Whatever it is, it is different for different people.

I remember as a kid my parents took us to the King Tut exhibit when it appeared in Chicago. We camped out with thousands of other of our closest friends.  We piled in at opening and looked among the interesting artifacts. Yawn for me...but then, there he was in all his glory...King Tut! I was drawn to this mummy for the colors of his coffin to his tightly wrapped body.  I was hooked!

Later on in life I saw mummies in the St. Louis Art Museum...

Both times I have been intrigued beyond belief and could go see them again and again and never be bored.

So, today thinking about mummies, I decided to continue on with my craftiness and add a mummy or two to my decorations.

I found on Pinterest a cute mummy idea and went with it. The instructions can be found here.

My results were less than stellar but for the most part I am happy with it.

October 2...Craftiness

Hello my fellow ghouls, welcome back to my crypt for day 2 of the Halloween countdown.







Today, as most of this week, I will be talking about some of my crafty projects I have done to get prepared for this month of fun.

Recently I was thrift store shopping. Don't you just love thrift stores? Anyway, I came across a packaged bit of wood pieces for $3. The package had cut out pumpkins and some other assorted pieces plus twine in it. I knew I could do something with it so, I brought them home with me. 

As I started looking at them, I realized that the pieces made a cute Halloween pumpkin box. My hubby decided to take on the task of putting one together and painting it.

I on the other hand saw something completely different with the pieces. What I saw was a Fall Harvest Mobile.

I gathered my Fall paints and went at it with a fever.

After I finished each piece to my satisfaction, I strung them with the twine that had been included in the packaging.  I hung them in my sliding glass doors and wha-la!

I painted some additional pumpkin pieces and hung them from my kitchen chandelier. I will be adding more to the chandelier but that is for a post later in this week.

Believe it or not, I still have tons of the wood pieces left. I am hoping to invite a friend and her kids over sometime this month for a pumpkin party. I am going to let them paint some and take home. Stay tuned!

*Yarn

I have mentioned on numerous occasions that I really like checking out Pinterest (my button is on my page if you want to add me). Before Easter I found a project using yarn to make string eggs. It was a project I actually had remembered doing as a kid in grade school. Well, sort of anyway. 


If you want complete instructions on how to make them go here. I will tell you that this is not the original one I found (I can't seem to find it again) and it calls for spray stiffener when we actually used Stay Flo liquid starch and glue.

One afternoon my daughter and I decided to try this out.  We decided to use the string you see in the above photo. Isn't it pretty? 
I can tell you now that we should have used yarn because it is thicker and seems to stay on the balloons better.

We wrapped the balloons to what we thought were ideal and left them to dry. We had to be very careful not to get them too sticky or the string simply did not adhere to the balloons. 

It took several days for even one balloon to dry and some didn't dry at all.  In the end, we actually just had one big mess and no cute egg balloons. In fact, some of the balloons (seen below) shriveled up before they were dried. Next time (if there actually is a next time) we will use yarn and tie them on thicker.

We aren't exactly sure what we did wrong but all in all, it was a fun project to attempt.  I enjoyed doing this with my daughter even if it was a complete disaster!
