Thankful Thursday and A Song (Linky) 1/23/2013

Hello my lovely blog-y friends. This week my mind has been on freedom and what that means. As I mentioned on Tuesday the definition is vast.  I guess though today I am feeling particularly thankful for the freedom to write my thought and feelings.  I have that right as a free thinker and am happy to write what comes to mind.

However, I do know that with that freedom (as with any freedom) there is a sense of responsibility  I suppose I am glad that is one of the things my parents taught me well is to be responsible with what you say and do.

I am also thankful for those people who have come before me to pave the way for my rights as a writer and a free thinker.  I especially am grateful for my maternal Great-Grandmother who was a suffragist.  She had no problem telling you what she thought. hee hee

Yes, I suppose I have a lot to be thankful for today and be free to do so.

Tuesdays Topics...Freedom 1/22/2013

Welcome back to Tuesdays Topics with me, Naila Moon.
Today I want to talk to you about freedom. Yeah, I know...do not send me letters...ok, just hear me out.

Per Webster's Dictionary:

Definition of FREEDOM

1

: the quality or state of being free: as

a : the absence of necessity, coercion, or constraint in choice or action

b : liberation from slavery or restraint or from the power of another : independence

c : the quality or state of being exempt or released usually from something onerous <freedom from care>

d : ease, facility freedom

Most people I would safely say, see the correct definition is #2. However, I find #1b to be interesting.

Yesterday our nation celebrated not only the 2nd inauguration of our President but also celebrated Martin Luther King's birthday, a man who is synonymous with freedom.

The word itself conjures so many ideas of what it really is to the varying people to whom the word applies.

Here in the United States we do indeed see freedom as a political right for everyone in the whole world but yet, we also define that right based on our own thoughts and life style. Just in this past year I have seen fights over the "freedom" to marry, the "freedom" of religion, the "freedom" to smoke/not smoke, the "freedom" to be born, the "freedom" to...you name it here.

So, I suppose that brings me back to the definition of #1b, we want to be free of another's restraint over us but yet we can not seem to agree on just how that is to be done when so many of us disagree on the same issues.  Yes, we also have the "freedom" to our own opinion but if that "freedom" restrains me then I am not free either. Am I?

Oh such a perplexity!

Day 17...The Ultimate Gift...the book

As I said in my Day 16 post, I have read two books in the last few days.  This book I read in a day and a half. I recommend this book as well if you have not read it. There was a movie, that I have seen, by the same title. 


In a nutshell, this book is about a young man who has to go through a series of task, that his great-uncle has set up in his will in order to receive, The Ultimate Gift.

My next few blogs will actually be based on the chapters of this book.  It gives you life's lessons without you even realizing it.
