Books, Books, and More Books #atozchallenge

Not having books in my life would be like having an oozing and open wound. I was introduced to books from the time I was a baby and did not know what  the written word was.

When I open a book, no matter what the genre is, I am instantly drawn into a different world. These worlds do indeed share hope, dream and give a myriad of possibilities.

 Celebrate National Library Week April 13-19, 2014

I have thus far read about kings and princesses (real and not so real), comics, and wizards. I have read about the trees, the bugs and Mother Earth. I have read about mustangs, airplanes and travel into the future.
I have read about so many people, places, and things.

As a child, I was told that "books are your friends" and to take care of the books I had. I have never forgotten this. I covet my books.

Oh, what would I do without books!

                                     

Halloween Day 12...more books and pumpkins

We are well into the weekend now and I want to finish up my post about Halloween books and pumpkins.

First I am going to share a delicious pumpkin story that I wrote a year or so ago. It is meant to be in only 100 words total. Hope that you like it.

She was new to this gig and had to get this absolutely right. She would have to fly far just to find the right one. An important mission indeed and she couldn't screw it up.

It happened that she flew past Salem and landed in a lovely pumpkin patch. There she saw five beautiful specimens sitting in a row.

“Ah, this one will work perfectly,” she thought, “It is nicely kissed.”

With all her might she took the pumpkin back to the shabby cottage and placed it carefully in the rocky driveway. Yes, the girl will have a lovely ride.

I went Goodwill shopping today and it just happened to be 50% off of the whole store. I thought I was in thrift store heaven! I went to actually look for some stuff for my costume. Believe me when I say, I have no idea about that.

Anyway, while I was there, I picked up two spook-tacular kids books. For a frighten-ly great cost of 50 cents for both!

The first one was The Haunted House. This is one of those chose your own ending books they used to sell. My kids loved reading these over and over with a different ending each time. This particular book has 18 possible endings for a truly frightful experience each time.

The second book I picked up was Monster Jokes. Now, I do not know any kids, anywhere, that didn't learn one or two jokes and repeat them over and over to nausea. Of course not laughing or at least groaning each time would have just been wrong.

Please allow me to share a couple with you.
What did the werewolf say to the alphabet?
Answer: I came to eat U.

What does a zombie use in the morning?
Answer: Aftergrave lotion

Book review and giveaway...Walk With Me by Darby Davenport

Darby Davenport is a new writer of romance novellas but not new to writing.

In her first book Walk With Me we meet the character of Charlie who has just rescued a rottweiler from the pound and knows nothing about dogs. We also meet Ethan, who own a golden retriever and has a past  that hurts him with loving another woman. The two meet in a dog park where Charlie is desperately trying to teach her new dog to behave.

What goes from a chance meeting turns in to a hot and steamy romance. The story twists and turns with Charlie and Ethan shedding everything including their clothing. One where past hurts, past loves, and simply the past melt away with honest to goodness lust.

I can honestly say that romance novels have not been my favorite genre but I was pleasantly surprised by reading this one. Darby Davenport's book had substance which was totally unexpected. The characters are fun, relate-able and real.

Book Review and Giveaway... The Underwater Pyramid In The Bermuda Triangle

If you recall a few weeks ago,  I reviewed a book by author, Linda Cadose. I thought her book was great so, I was excited when she sent me her next installment, The Underwater Pyramid in the Bermuda Triangle.

The story picked up with the main character of  Dr. Cliff Post, the archaeologist, who along with his adopted son, Matt and marine archaeologist, Kyle Wilson, has just discovered an under water pyramid in the Bermuda triangle just off the coast of Cuba.

The discovery leads to many more finds including mummies in water tight coffins, walls with cryptic hieroglyphs and a treasure trove of other goodies.

The exploration of the pyramid  also lead to a special item that proves Dr. Post's theory of aliens and the lost city of Atlantis. Of course that item gets stolen and cause a couple of twists in the story including someone getting shot! Whoa!

As Linda Cadose did with the last book, she packs this one with a ton of information including a couple of recipes. Yes, recipes!

The reader learns about the Bermuda Triangle, pirates, scuba diving, and so much more. If that is not enough, the book is written based on a real archaeological find. How cool is that?

This book is once again targeted to the 9 year old and up particularly for boys. However, upon reading this book, I would push it closer to high school age. Linda Cadose did try to incorporate girls more in to this story with the addition of a sister for the character, Matt.

Among the pages of The Underwater Pyramid In The Bermuda Triangle is an underlying story that could be construed as very adult topics: the dynamics of marriage where deception takes place, divorce and effects on children, and finally political slants.

I really find Linda Cadose to be an excellent writer and I think her story is fantastic by itself. However, as I mentioned in my last review of her previous book, I think that story does get lost in all of the information.
Since she has a love for history and archeology, I would like to see maybe a book just about that.

I have recently found out she is in the writing process of another book and I look forward to reading this new one when it comes out.

Innovative Online Book Tours Review of Forbidden Fire by Kimberly Kinrade

Forbidden Fire by Kimberly Kinrade is the second book in the Forbidden trilogy. The title of the book is a tease for it gives the illusion of a steamy romance. This is far from what the book  actually is.
 What makes this book so interesting is it is told in the voice, eyes and ears of three of the main characters, Sam, Drake and Lucy.

This sci-fi fantasy book continues the tale of  Sam and Drake who have escaped from the Rent-a-Kid Organization and "school" for para-normal kids. Throughout the book Sam and Drake are stalked by the Seeker who wants desperately to have them back in the fold. The Seeker will stop at nothing to get them back and only  mayhem follows them. If that is not enough, Sam and Drake struggle with a blossoming love affair, worry and utter disappointment as they try to bring down the organization.

In the mix of things the reader learns about the students and friends of Sam who are still stuck at the "school" and facing demons of their own. A Mr. Black and his goons have been hired by the Seeker to keep the students safe, or at least so it seems. Instead he locks down the students and in his wake is anger and murder.

Sam's best friend, Lucy and her twin brother Luke, become reluctantly involved with the group The Freedom Fighters who work to take down Rent-a-Kid. Through mind reading, Lucy is able to inform Sam of the trouble at the "school" and seeks her help.

In the end, using their para-normal powers, Lucy, Luke, Sam, Drake and all the other students overcome their captors but not before heart ache and loss comes their way.  A couple of  surprise twists in the plot not only assist but encourage their endeavors.

I highly recommend this book as a must read and I look forward to reading the next book in the trilogy. Thumbs up!

LIttle Libraries Everywhere

 
I am a great proponent of literacy for all. By being able to read one is able to gain knowledge they never had before and possibly even boost themselves out of poverty.

I love to read. Believe me, I read everything! I used to drive my Mom crazy reading cereal boxes while eating breakfast. *chuckles*
I have several books on my shelf to read and several I am in the process of reading.

That is why I was delighted today when I came across the idea of Little Free Libraries. Essentially, it was a brain child created in order to share good books with other people and to create a better community.  People build these little libraries and then fill them with about 20-30 books the person has already read. If someone takes a book then that person is asked to share another book by bringing it to the little library.  It is an awesome way to recycle books and to read ones that have not been read yet.   I thought what a cool idea and I want one! Day 17...The Ultimate Gift...the book

As I said in my Day 16 post, I have read two books in the last few days.  This book I read in a day and a half. I recommend this book as well if you have not read it. There was a movie, that I have seen, by the same title. 


In a nutshell, this book is about a young man who has to go through a series of task, that his great-uncle has set up in his will in order to receive, The Ultimate Gift.

My next few blogs will actually be based on the chapters of this book.  It gives you life's lessons without you even realizing it.

Is it a Harry Potter weekend for you?

Well, here we are. It has now been a full day since the last of the Harry Potter films has opened.

I am giddy with excitement. Whoo hoo!!!!!!

Ok, so I lied.  Seriously, I just saw the first of the two part movies just last night on (gasp) DVD.  My husband and I did not want to watch it when it first came out a year ago because we did not want to wait so long to see the next part. The first part was long in parts but cool. It ended at a section that seemed right too.

We will probably go see the second part sometime here shortly but I am not all crazy like some people I know. (For the record, I babysat so that my son and daughter-in-law could go to a midnight first showing of the movie.) Oh, don't get me wrong, I have liked everyone of the previous movies (and we own them). I will even go so far as to say that I have seen them more than once.

The brutally honest truth is that I have never read even one of the books. Now, I know some people would say that is total sacrilege and they cannot believe that to be so. However, it is true!  I have started the first book and have read about three chapters. It is on my list of things to do this year. So, I will get to it...really, I will. Right after I read the 3-4 other books I have to read, wash the laundry, pick up the mail, do the dishes, take a shower, feed the cat...um.....

October blog challenge-Day 3...favorite book

Hello fellow Bloggers. Today is day 3 of the October blog challenge and today's entry is supposed to be a favorite book.

I really have to think about this one because I never have really had one favorite book.  I have always liked to read and did read many books from the time I could read. 


One of the books I thought about almost immediately was Daddy Long Legs. This book I had as a young child and coveted. I wish I had it to this day. It was about an orphan girl who has an anonymous donor who sends her to college. In return she writes him letters about her studies.

A children's book that I like right now is called, The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs. This story is told from the wolf's point of view. It is humourous and a classic twist on the well known fable.

A more adult book I read not long ago and really like is called The Wednesday Letters. This book captures the heart of love, family and secrets within.

Reading is something I enjoy doing and everyone should read everyday or at least as often as they can.
