Thankful Thursday and A Song w/linky

Welcome back to another Thursday, the last for this month.

Today is Thankful Thursday, hosted by myself and Xmas Dolly, the day we all discuss what we have been thankful for during the week.

This week I have been very thankful for opportunities. I have had some very different opportunities arise this week in different avenues of my life.

I cannot be thankful enough for them and some of the people who have put them in my path. They have only helped me to move forward.

When I was a child my parents had given me my very own large Children's Bible. It was filled with pictures and stories that were easily understandable. Later on I read these same stories as an adult in another edition they had given me.

In fact, my Mother collected Bibles and had many editions in our home that were fully accessible to us if we wanted to look at them or read them.


 



That is why I find it interesting that on March 3rd beginning at 8PM (check your local listenings) the History Channel is going to present a 10 part miniseries retelling many of the stories that I grew up with. Check out the clips from the miniseries too. Looks pretty awesome to me.

Tuesday's Topics...Letters

Hello my favorite blog peeps.  How are you today?

Welcome to another discussion of Tuesday's Topics. This week I want to talk all about letters.

No, not the ABC's.  I am talking about real handwritten letters.

Do you remember those?

I remember writing friends that I had met at Summer camp and pen pals too.  I had a few pen pals actually not too long ago.  I should write them again.

Anyway, the art of letter writing is almost completely a thing of the past with e-mail, texting, Facebook etc. etc.  However, some people just won't completely let it go (like me) and some people are bringing it back in style.

Case in point...

This past Sunday I came across an article about the winner of the kindness award. (Who knew there was an award?)  Upon clicking on the article I found a gal by the name of  Hannah Brencher.

Hannah was feeling very lonely in New York City and was literally on the subway when she realized others might be lonely too and in need of encouragement.

Right then she wrote her very first, what she calls love letters, to a stranger. She then dropped it off somewhere for someone else to find.  Before she knew it, she had written 400 love letters to strangers and 'delivered' them all over New York. Of course she blogged about it.

What began with 400 became thousands with the help of some friends and bloggers.  Hannah and her volunteer crew mail out bundles of love letters every month to people who have requested to have letters sent to another, not to mention the ones that still get stuck here and there.  How cool is that?

If you think someone could use a pick-me-up, you can go over to the site and submit a name. Believe me, the recipient will get letters! Don't you wished you received something besides junk in the mail?

So, where does this leave me?

I have decided after reading this great article, that I am going to leave random letters in places around this area.  I hope my letters will bring hope or encouragement to someone that finds them.

Next, I am going to find the addresses of the pen pals I had (which numbered 4) and write them letters.

I might join the crew at "More Love Letters" and send through their PO box but I am going to do the above first.

I encourage you to follow suit. Who knows who might pick up your letter. It may be just the words that person needs that day.

Tuesdays Topics...Kindness

Welcome back to a early afternoon of Tuesdays Topics.  Today's topic is about kindness.

I try to catch the Ellen DeGeneres show when I can.  I am not consistent but I do like her show.
This week she is asking all of her viewers to show kindness this week everyday. Now, I know she truly wants people to be kind everyday of the year not just during this week.

Yesterday, I received in the mail an act of kindness.
I received a fairly big box of all sorts of goodies from someone I know. (Well, truth is, I only know her through the net but "know" her none-the-less.) She sent me a box with stuff I like, stuff I need too, and just stuff she wanted to send me. Oh the joy!

The fact is, she found it in her heart to do an act of selfless kindness.

It is not hard to be kind, really, it isn't!  All it takes is a moment, even if it means two seconds of your time.

There are many different ways to be kind.  I can come up with ways on my own but I thought of Google-ing a few. Click on each one to read what you could do.

The Three Lost Kids and Cupid's Capture...book review

Today I am excited to share another book with you from author Kimberly Kinrade.
Her chapter book, The Three Lost Kids & Cupid's Capture, is out of a collection of chapter books based on three young sisters, Lexie, Maddie and Bella and their dog Tay-Tay.

Lexie, an extremely smart 1st grader, is very grumpy and having one very bad Valentine's Day. She does not feel she is good enough for anything because she is so small . She thinks even her hearts are all wrong.

What makes things worse is everyone else in her class also seems to be in a bad mood too. She cannot even get along with her best friend, Abigail.

Upon finding her older sisters on the playground, she consults her "Magic Mirror of Ice" to see what is going on.  It is only then revealed that the three girls have special magical powers that do not work on full power in the world they are in but in the alternate worlds.

The mirror pulls the three and their dog into the world of Heartland which they had never visited before. This world is full of beautiful hearts  including the trees and the clouds and loveliness all around. This is also home of Cupid whom they meet purely by accident in a twist of fate. Cupid informs them that Heartland is being under attack by a terrible monster who ends up capturing Cupid.

The girls embark on a trek that takes them through specific stages, including facing the monster,  in which they must overcome in order to save Heartland and free Cupid. Only working together will they be able to do what seems an impossible task.

Can it be done? Will the girl's save Heartland  from this evil monster? Will Lexie learn to love herself for who she is?

This book is aimed at 6-9 year old girls in particular although, I think young boys would like this book too.

I think 6-9 year old kids will be able to identify with Lexie who has to come to understand herself and love herself. This is a tough stage and kids this age often do feel inadequate as they are trying to feel their way through the world. The character Lexie is no different.

I love this book on so many levels. The dream world fantasy of the book had me hooked from the first few lines but the strength the characters eventually found is what I found to be truly great. Besides, I have always wanted to meet Cupid and have a conversation with her. Haven't you?

As I have read none of the other books in the series, I am now intrigued and want to read them all. In addition, I am likely to purchase the set and save them for my Granddaughter when she gets just a bit older. She will certainly relate to the character Bella but I am certain she will also find her own magic within the pages.

This book gets a two thumbs way up from me.

The Hidden Chamber In The Great Sphinx Book Review and Giveaway

As a lover of all things history, one of my favorite genres to read is historical fiction books. So, it was pure excitement when I got the opportunity to review the book The Hidden Chamber In The Great Sphinx by Linda Cadose.

This book peaked my interest right away as I truly find anything Egyptian dealing with pyramids, pharaohs and especially the Sphinx quite fascinating. Linda Cadose has all of that in the pages of this book along with factual information for the reader.

The book follows archaeologist Dr. Cliff Post and his friend, Dr. Abdul Saad who discover a hidden chamber in the Great Sphinx. The right paw is opened to find much more than originally could be imagined and leads them to an even greater discovery. Many organizations get involved including the United Nations and The Museum of Antiquities of Egypt. Each organization has its own part in the discovery and gives  its own account to what exactly was discovered in factual detail.

The plot is written in such a way that the reader learns information about not only the Great Sphinx but also about Egypt, its mysteries, and the study of archaeology. Twisted among the pages is an endearing love story between Dr. Post and his next door neighbor. Also, there lies deception and intrigue.

Linda Cadose writes a good tale but I do think the factual information over ran her story line. I was also surprised that some references in the book would be over the heads of young readers as they would have no frame of reference. Overall though, this book is obviously directed to the child who would love to read about Egypt and the historical nature of it and I am positive they would love it!

This book is recommended for the 9-15 year old reader. I personally would recommend it for the young pre-teen to young teen because some words in the book would be a bit difficult for the younger child.
