Friday stuff...recipes

Growing up in my parent's household, Mom would always make great use of whatever leftovers we had from Thanksgiving dinner the night before. It was not unusual to wake up to her making us potato latkes or as she called them potato pancakes.

She did not make them traditional as the recipe I am going to include below, but they were still yummy! She usually took the leftover mashed potatoes and smashed some on to an electric griddle with a bit of oil. She would fry them up just so and flip, the other side got the same. We always ate them just with some butter.
Really, they were so good!

What are some of your food traditions?

Review of Jake and the Neverland Treasure Hunt Game

Recently, the company Wonder Forge, gave me the opportunity to review the cute game of Jake and the Neverland Treasure Hunt Game.  I love games for all ages and though it would be fun to try out.

This particular game says it is for 4 year olds and up. With the smaller pieces that are in the game, I think that is a good recommendation. It is also for two players up to four. This would be good for teaching sharing.

Game play:

The game comes with 5 "treasures" that are supposed to be put around the house. The game then is played like a simple memory game. Each player gets an opportunity to turn over two doubloons. With some of the doubloons you have to use the spy glass to figure out what the item is.

If a player matches two items, then he/she turns over the timer and runs to find the "treasure", except the player can only pick up the "treasure" with the soft sword included in the game.

Issues:

As cute as this game is, I had a couple of problems with it.
The doubloons that you have to look at through the spyglass does not work. We tried bright light and dimmer light and we simply could not see the items. This would be extremely frustrating for any kid.
I suppose you could just make a regular match/memory game and that would solve the problem.

My other issue I had is all the parts. Although, the game comes with an awesome storage bag that doubles as play board, inevitably all the parts are sure to be lost. All that would be left is the soft sword and the spy glass. I guess kids could just have fun pretending with them.

Overall:

Overall, I would like this game if it was revamped a bit. As a former preschool educator and grandparent to young children. I found this game to be frustrating due to its problems which unfortunately, outweighed its cuteness. However, I would still probably give it a 3 out of 5 stars just because it could be adapted and kids would enjoy all the "pirate" stuff.

Buy on Amazon.

Wordless(ish) Wednesday...11/27/13

Today for Wordless(ish) Wednesday, I am going to share something with you that was huge for me. It may seem impossible for some but in actuality, it is quite true.
I give you the FIRST time I ever cooked a Thanksgiving turkey and meal was in 2008.

The funny thing about this is we accidently left the giblets and neck in the turkey and cooked it that way. LOL!!!

Song for Thanksgiving-sung to Frère Jacques

Turkey Dinner
Turkey Dinner, turkey dinner,

Gather round, gather round,
Who will get the drumstick?
Yummy, yummy drumstick,
All sit down, all sit down.

Cornbread muffins, chestnut stuffing,
Puddin' pie, one foot high,
All of us were thinner
Until we came to dinner;
Me oh my! Me oh my!

Coffee Chat...Let's talk! 11/26/13

I am back for another Tuesdays Coffee Chat with Rory from Time Out For Mom.
Last week she asked us to get crafty and discuss. Well, I said I would be back to discuss but never got back.
Never fail though, I have a goody for that one just check it out below but before that let's discuss today's topic. Shall we?

What one thing would you refuse to share?

Now, this is a tough one for me because I tend to share whatever I have. I have shared clothes, spirituality, my thoughts, my home, bed, my cold, money, the bathroom, my car, food (even off my plate) and gum.
I know eww...but, I did.

By nature, I am a sharer.

I guess the only thing I really would prefer not to share is my toothbrush. Yeah, I think that is kinda gross. However, if you really want to use my toothbrush go ahead but I am going to go get a new one!

On to craftiness. How about a visual?

Hope you come back on Wednesday for Wordless(ish) but if not, Happy Thanksgiving!

Monday's Music Moves Me 11/25/13

Well, hey there! It is Monday and the start of the week toward Thanksgiving here in the U.S.
It is also time once again for Monday's Music Moves Me hosted by Xmas Dolly, with co-host of Stacy, Colette,Cathy, and me.

This week we usually would have a freebie but we had one more former Spotlight Dancer theme before December to do. So, it was decided by the head honcho that her theme was happening this week. It is a fun one too...select songs you listened to in high school!

Well, now, I have to tell you, I am truly an 80's gal. I was a "mallrat" if there ever was one.
I entered high school in August of 1982 and graduated in May of 1986.
Yes, I can claim that to my 15 seconds of fame.

So, I am ready to hop in my Delorean and crank up my radio with some tunes. Get ready because they were "totally awesome"!

Let me select my first tape with a "totally rad" #1 song from 1983.

"Like, O My God" I could "totally chill" to anything Michael Jackson sung but in 1984 he teamed up with  this "most excellent" singer for this #1 song. Let me put it in my Sony Walkman for you.

In 1985, there were so many songs to "veg out" with. However, the one #1 song that was "fresh" "to the max" was this one. I could even find it on MTV!

By 1986, I was "stoked" because I was a senior and ready to "book". Of course the music continued to be "gnarly". One such #1 song was this one that even people might have break danced to.

Before I an "wiggin" out and throw my Rubix cube due to not understanding of the thing, I have one more item to offer you from my "bitchin' " years in the '80's.

This would have been me in 1988 with my most "totally tubular" Dudette. She was 1 year old here.

Look at that hair! "Gag me with a spoon!"

Make sure to link up and visit these "bodacious" people. "That's the ticket!"

Thankful Thursday 11/21/13

Welcome back to another Thankful Thursday. This is the day I post what I am most grateful for or have been for the week.  Please join me if you wish. I love new friends and old too.

This week my hubby and I went out shopping a couple of times. He took me to a place we had never been too. He enjoys taking me on little excursions now and again.

In addition this week, he brought home a brand new Christmas tree and a little Snoopy window cling for me. I know these are things but the joy it brought me is unmeasurable.

So, this week, I am just so grateful for my hubby being in my life and for the little things that bring me joy.

What about you? Tell me in comments and I will come visit.

Monday's Music is in the Pink...11/18/13

Welcome back to another Monday folks. We are quickly approaching the Thanksgiving holiday here in the U.S. and of course that builds excitement for me. I do love the holidays even if I cannot spend them with my family this year.

Since this is Monday that also means music with host Xmas Dolly and the music train of Callie, Cathy, Stacy and me! This week we have a bit of a challenging theme that was picked by a former spotlighter: Songs with Pink in the title. She chose the theme to honor breast cancer awareness. Honorable!

Spotlight Dancers

This weeks Spotlight dancer is none other than our gal, Becca!

Let me see...thinking, thinking...

Let's start out with classic pink!

Moving on to this one:

More pink explosion with this one:

Finally let us round up this pink extravaganza with this one:

Wait a minute! Do we have bonuses here.
Remember folks, it may not be October but that does not mean you cannot get your breast exams!
